About

Extreme weather events are increasingly influenced by a warming climate, yet translating physical attribution into actionable societal metrics remains challenging. In this seminar, Davide Faranda presents a framework to quantify socioeconomic exposure to climate-amplified hazards, using the analogue-based attribution approach developed in www.climameter.org.

The method identifies weather situations similar to a given extreme in past and present climates, isolates the climate change signal in key variables (e.g., temperature), and intersects this signal with gridded population and economic data. Exposure is defined using threshold-based hazard masks combined with areas where the attribution signal is statistically significant, allowing the contribution of anthropogenic climate change under present-day socioeconomic conditions to be isolated.

About

Extreme weather and environmental exposures are key drivers of disease burden in populations worldwide. In this seminar, Dr. Alexandra Schneider — Deputy Director of the Institute of Epidemiology at Helmholtz Zentrum München — will explore how weather extremes (heat, cold, heavy rain) and environmental factors like air pollution, noise, and urban built environments affect human health, with an emphasis on cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory outcomes. Drawing on her work leading the Environmental Risks research group, the talk will highlight evidence on temperature–health relationships, exposure–response functions, vulnerable subgroups, and synergistic effects of pollutants with heat. The seminar will discuss both acute (short‑term) and chronic (long‑term) health impacts, and implications for adaptation and public health strategies in a changing climate.

Since 2010 she has led the Environmental Risks research group, investigating how weather, climate change, air pollution, noise and urban environments influence population health — particularly cardiovascular, metabolic and other chronic diseases. Her interdisciplinary work combines environmental science, meteorology and epidemiological methods to generate evidence for interventions and public health protection in the face of climate and environmental stressors. Schneider holds a Diploma in Meteorology, a Master’s in Public Health and a PhD in Human Biology and is active in international collaborations on environmental health.

About

A session with Dr. Rose Pritchard from the University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute, as she examines the role of big data in addressing global environmental crises.

Through case studies, she will explore how digital advancements are reshaping biodiversity conservation and the documentation of climate-related loss and damage.

Key Topics

The potential and limitations of big data-driven approaches in addressing environmental challenges.

Social, political, and ecological implications of using advanced data technologies.

Ethical considerations and the need for safeguards in the use of powerful data-driven tools.

Summary

Advances in digital technologies have led to an abundance of data, along with new ways to process, communicate, and store this information. However, ensuring that these tools contribute to the most effective and fair responses to environmental challenges requires a deeper engagement with the social, political, and ecological systems in which this data is used.

In this webinar, Dr. Rose Pritchard will explore how big data can be harnessed to address global environmental crises through two case studies. The first examines how satellite remote sensing data is transforming biodiversity conservation practices worldwide. The second discusses a current collaboration that assesses the social risks and rewards of using large-language models to document loss and damage from climate extremes.

These examples highlight both the potential of data-driven approaches in an era of rapid environmental change and the necessary safeguards that must be implemented as these tools become increasingly powerful.

About:

This hybrid seminar features Marianna Blix Grimaldi, an adviser at Sweden’s central bank and an expert on financial stability and financial markets[1].
Using data from 52 countries over the past two decades[3], Grimaldi’s research finds that higher carbon emissions (a proxy for transition risk) are associated with higher sovereign borrowing costs, with the effect especially pronounced in developing economies and notably since the Paris Agreement in 2015[4]. In contrast, gradual warming trends have not yet significantly raised borrowing costs, but severe climate-related disasters – such as floods, storms or droughts – do lead to higher sovereign yields for countries with limited fiscal space (high debt levels) and lower incomes[5]. Marianna Blix Grimaldi will explore the implications of these findings for investors and policymakers, underscoring the importance of integrating climate risks into financial decision-making and highlighting the need for policies that jointly address climate change and sovereign debt challenges to avoid a vicious cycle of escalating risks[6].

Marianna Blix Grimaldi is an adviser at the Financial Stability Department of Sveriges Riksbank, where she works on financial markets, risk assessment and the intersection between climate change and sovereign credit risk. Her recent research focuses on how both transition risks—such as carbon-intensive economic structures—and physical risks from climate-related disasters influence sovereign borrowing costs and financial stability. She has extensive experience in monetary policy analysis, market microstructure, and financial modelling, and has contributed to several Riksbank research projects on climate-related financial risks. Marianna Blix Grimaldi holds a PhD in Economics and has previously worked in roles spanning academic research and policy development.
