Doctoral network for understanding and predicting impacts of climate extremes under global change

Training experts to face climate extremes

Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and compound climate extreme events are becoming more frequent and more severe in many regions across the globe. Their impacts cut across health systems, infrastructure, ecosystems, and societies at large, yet expertise to understand, predict and manage these impacts remains fragmented across disciplines.

The Understanding and Predicting Impacts of Climate Extremes under Global Change Doctoral Network (CLIMES DN) addresses this gap by training a new generation of doctoral researchers who can integrate knowledge from climate science, data science, risk assessment, and the social sciences. CLIMES DN is supported by the Research Executive Agency through a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action.

The project combines interdisciplinary research with structured doctoral training to form experts capable of working across academia and the public, private, and third sectors, with a focus on:

  • Improved compilation and use of climate impact data
  • Innovative approaches to risk assessment
  • Pushing the frontier of impact forecasting

The aim is to translate climate information into actionable knowledge for adaptation and resilience, thus strengthening Europe’s capacity to respond to climate risks.

The project starts 1st March 2026.

CLIMES Doctoral Network has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant No. 101226348.

Research and training approach

CLIMES DN brings together expertise from climate science, hydrology, urban sociology, electrical engineering, data science, epidemiology and more. Doctoral candidates work on research projects that cut across these fields, supported by an internationally-leading supervisory team.

CLIMES DN further trains doctoral candidates in transferable and soft skills through tailored network-wide training events.

International consortium

CLIMES DN is implemented by an international consortium of universities, research institutes, public authorities, and private and third-sector partners. This structure ensures that doctoral candidates are embedded in a realistic research-to-application ecosystem, with access to diverse perspectives, datasets, and use cases. The network fosters mobility, secondments, and close interaction with stakeholders working directly on climate adaptation, public health, infrastructure, and risk management.
